چکیده

This paper introduces a new probabilistic specification of reliable broadcast communication primitives, called Reliable Broadcast. This specification captures in a precise way the reliability of practical broadcast algorithms that, on the one hand, were devised with some form of reliability in mind but, on the other hand, are not considered reliable according to “traditional” reliability specifications. We illustrate the use of our specification by precisely measuring and comparing the reliability of two popular broadcast algorithms, namely Bimodal Multicast and IP Multicast. In particular, we quantify how the reliability of each algorithm scales with the size of the system.

ERP: An Efficient and Reliable Protocol for Emergency Message Dissemination in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Many safety-related applications in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks require fast and reliable emergency message dissemination through multi-hop broadcast. However, the conventional broadcast mechanism is neither efficient nor reliable because it results in serious contention and collisions, which is usually referred to as the broadcast storm problem. In this paper, we propose ERP, a two-phase broadca...

∆-reliability *

This paper presents a new, non-binary measure of the reliability of broadcast algorithms, called ∆Reliability. This measure quantifies the reliability of practical broadcast algorithms that, on the one hand, were devised with some form of reliability in mind, but, on the other hand, are not considered reliable according to the “traditional” notion of broadcast reliability [8]. Our specification...

Girth, minimum degree, independence, and broadcast independence

An independent broadcast on a connected graph $G$is a function $f:V(G)to mathbb{N}_0$such that, for every vertex $x$ of $G$, the value $f(x)$ is at most the eccentricity of $x$ in $G$,and $f(x)>0$ implies that $f(y)=0$ for every vertex $y$ of $G$ within distance at most $f(x)$ from $x$.The broadcast independence number $alpha_b(G)$ of $G$is the largest weight $sumlimits_{xin V(G)}f(x)$of an ind...
